The "Introduction to Chanoyu" experience is hosted by three different local groups.
Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association
Tankokai, the Seattle chapter of Chado Urasenke, is a membership organization for the Urasenke Chado practitioners.Their mission is to promote better understanding and appreciation of the rich culture and spirit of Japan through the art of Chado, "The Way of Tea."
Omotesenke-ryu
Chanoyu, which attained greatness under Sen no Rikyu, it a tradition that has been handed down for over 400 years. Omotesenke-ryu is a Seattle-based group that practices this long lineage, and their presentation at Seattle Japanese Garden is "a communication of the minds of host and guests through the enjoyment of delicious tea together."
Chaboshu
Chaboshu is Seattle's premier men's tea group, which was established to promote public awareness about Japanese tea ceremonial practices for men. The group consists of members from different Chado schools.
TICKETS AND RESERVATIONS
Tickets are $15/person. Tea ceremony tickets can be purchased on the event page. The tickets for a given month will be available at the beginning of the previous month.
For groups of 10 or more, we recommend reserving a private ceremony. They are available to book with 3-weeks notice, and typically offered immediately prior to or after the public tea ceremonies at noon or 4 p.m. For more details, please call (206) 684-4725.
Accessibility
The Seattle Japanese Garden is a culturally authentic site, and for this reason some areas of the garden are not accessible to people with disabilities, including the garden immediately surrounding the tea house. We can host accessible tea ceremonies in the Tateuchi Community Room by request, please call to inquire.
